## Questions

### What is Astro?

Astro is an open-source web framework for content-driven sites. Pages are built as finished HTML, and JavaScript loads only for the parts that need it, which is why Astro sites are fast by default.

### What is EmDash?

EmDash is an open-source, MIT-licensed CMS written in TypeScript and built for Astro. It started at Cloudflare and reached 1.0 in September 2026. You get an admin for posts, pages, media and menus, plugins that run in a sandbox, and an MCP server on every site for AI agents.

### Is EmDash mature enough for a business site?

For a marketing site, publication or company blog, yes. It’s also young, with a small plugin ecosystem and fewer people who know it than older CMSs. That’s why the audit comes first: if your site depends on something EmDash can’t do yet, we’ll tell you.

### Can my team edit the site without a developer?

Yes. Editors work in an admin, not in code, with pages, posts, media, menus, drafts and scheduling. New pages come together from approved blocks, so they stay on brand without a developer.

### Will I lose my search rankings?

No one can honestly promise rankings. What we can promise is the work that protects them: a baseline before we start, a redirect for every indexed URL, the same titles, descriptions and structured data, and a check of each redirect before launch.

### What moves from my current site?

Content moves: pages, posts, media, categories, tags, authors, menus and SEO fields. Templates, page-builder layouts and add-ons usually don’t. Those are rebuilt as Astro components, and the migration map shows each one before you commit.

### When is Astro the wrong choice?

If you run a large online store, memberships, courses or a web app people sign in to, a platform built for that is usually a better fit. We’ll tell you in the audit rather than sell you a move you don’t need.

### Can I use React or Vue?

Yes. Astro works with React, Vue, Svelte and others, so existing components can come across and load only where they’re needed.

### Do I need to use AI?

No. The admin works like any CMS. The MCP server is there if you want an agent to draft, edit or schedule content, under the same permissions as a person on your team.

### Who owns the site?

You do. The code sits in your GitHub, the content in your Cloudflare database and the domain with your registrar. Any Astro developer can pick it up. If you leave us, we hand everything over.

### Am I locked in to Cloudflare?

No. EmDash also runs on any Node.js server with SQLite, PostgreSQL or libSQL and S3-compatible storage. Cloudflare is our default because it’s fast and cheap to run, and the plugin sandbox enforces tighter limits there.

### Do you only build with EmDash?

It’s our default, not a rule. A site that rarely changes may not need a CMS at all, so plain Astro is the better fit. If you’re already on Sanity or another headless CMS, we can build the Astro front end on top of it.
